Many people love camping in California. In fact, people drive from out of state and fly from other countries to camp in and around California. Why? Because California offers such a diverse variety of camping activities. Not only can campers fish and hike, but they can also go backpacking and even ride on horseback down nature trails.

If you happen to love the outdoors, then camping in California is probably one of the best ways you could spend your week or weekend. Just close your eyes for a second and picture the pristine wilderness. Imagine the trails you could travel; and the sights, sounds, and smells of the great outdoors.

You Will Want to Carefully Select Items for Your Camping Trip

But back to reality. You’re not at the campsite quite yet, but you do need to start preparing. You wont need to bring a ton of equipment if you go camping in California, but you should have at least the bare minimum needed for an enjoyable trip. What does this include?

You should include in your list the basic items like tents, stoves, a few cooking utensils, folding chairs, sleeping bags, you favorite food, water, clothes, toiletries and a GPS tracking device just in case you get lost. If you have no GPS tracking device and you cannot afford to buy one, then the good old map will do. Maps are usually available at the entrance of the park so make sure that you get one to help you find your way around. Although getting lost can be a kind of adventure, it is not really that much fun at all especially when it happens more than once is a day.

You may also want to bring along a first aid kit in case of emergencies and some mosquito or insect repellants. If you are planning to camp near some bodies of water, there is a big possibility that mosquitoes and other insects will bother you especially during the night. To make sure that you get a good night’s sleep, bring along some insect repellants. Insect repellants in lotion form is usually effective.

When camping in California, avoid carrying heavy loads. If you plan to do some walking on the way to the campsite, you better make sure that you do not carry excess weights. Make sure that you do not carry bags and other materials that weigh more than 10% of your body weight. According to experts, carry objects which are more that 10% of your body weight can take a toll on your bones and muscles and may cause some injuries. Besides, you carry heavy loads; you will probably be too tired to do anything when you get to the campsite.
