In order to experience all the treasures of a good camping trip, you will have to spend some time before the trip to purchase all of the requisite equipment. Obviously, high on this list is shelter–unless, of course, you don’t mind falling asleep near wild animals and—and completely unprotected. And, of course, the most often used form of shelter at camping sites is the tent.

Now, when you shop for a tent, you want to have a number of specific things in mind. For instance, how many people do you plan to bring on the trip? That’s important to consider when selecting your tent. Get a tent that’s too small and you’ll end up in all sorts of trouble. Next, consider the poles that will support the tent. Do they require a NASA engineer to assemble them? Or is the assembly straight-forward with little surprises? Last, you will want to consider what’s called the “rain fly.” This is something we will go over later on in the article.

The Size of the Tent is Critically Important

Perhaps the most important consideration when purchasing a tent is the size. Consideration of size can be based on a number of factors. One of those factors is the size of the camping party.

For example camping tents come in various sizes. Often these sizes can range from pup tents for one or two individuals or tents that can accommodate larger families comprised of six individuals. In addition, there are camping tents that can be divided up into separate rooms. These rooms are divide by separate zippered covers. Generally, a good suggestion to follow is to purchase a camping tent that advertises its ability to shelter two more people than what you actually need.

Another factor to consider when shopping for camping tents is to keep in mind what other sporting excursions that the campers will be involved in. For example, if the camping trip involves rafting or hiking, you may want to consider very light weight and portable camping tents.

The Type of Poles You Select Is Important, Too

The supporting poles of camping tents are obviously an important feature to consider. This is because they prop up the tenting material which allows for space between the occupant and the covering.

The most important feature of the poles to consider is their strength. Therefore, the most recommended poles to purchase are those made of aluminum. This material is best based on their being light weight and strong.

What’s a Rain Fly?

One additional feature that is recommended when shopping for camping tents is that the tent be equipped with a rain fly. A rain fly provides protection for the tent in the event of rain. Its function is similar to the use of an umbrella.

When selecting a camping tent that is equipped with this feature, the buyer will want to buy the tent with the biggest rain fly. This will allow for the rain fly to extend down the sides of the tent and not just the top of the tent only.
