What Could Be More Beautiful and Serene Than Winter Camping?
October 2nd, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedWinter camping may seem like somewhat of a paradox. Why would anyone want to be outside in the freezing cold and snow, some might wonder. But others do not think this. Their passion for the outdoors greatly outweighs any problems they might encounter due to the inclement weather. And because they are willing to put up with all of this, they benefit greatly.
If you are not one of these people, you probably should not consider winter camping. If you an expert camper and like the cold weather, then winter camping really is something you should add to your “to do” list.
So where should you start? Start by getting the right equipment for your winter camping excursion. Not only will having the right equipment improve your trip, but it also could prevent frostbite or even death, if the temperatures drop that low. Remember, a lot of things can happen outside in the winter, when it is both cold and dark. Some of these things will enhance your camping trip greatly; however, at the same time, they may pose a significant risk on your life if you do not handle them a reasonable way.
To begin with, you will want to make sure that you have a tent that can withstand harsh weather. You will also want to make sure that you get a good sleeping bag that will retain your body heat and protect you from the cold air. You will also want to ensure that your tent remains vented throughout the night, so that moisture doesn’t build up and form ice inside.
Your clothing for winter camping should be in layers which can be used to maintain your body temperature. One layer should be comfortable against your skin while the second layer can serve as an insulating layer. The outer layer needs to be waterproof and possibly windproof to protect you in case of a heavy storm. Do not use cotton materials when winter camping as it loses insulating qualities when wet and takes a long time to dry. Wool or synthetic materials are friendlier to camping in the winter.
Protection From Unexpected Elements Is Crucial
Even with a good weather forecast, Mother Nature can sometimes turn a beautiful day into a nightmare with unexpected storms or winds. Being prepared for such likelihood can help you survive your winter camping trip. If you are using a tent, set it up in an area protected from the prevailing winds to avoid the disaster of having a sudden heavy gust tear it away with all your belongings with it.
Remember that everything happens slower when winter camping except your water becoming frozen. It is important to stay hydrated in the winter, as the drier air will suck the moisture out of your body quicker. Do not plan on eating snow for hydration as all that does is drop your body temperature. If you count on the snow for a water source, make sure you have a means of melting it before it is consumed.
For your food supply, a diet high in carbohydrates will provide the needed energy for being outdoors in the winter. Any meals you plan should be simple and yet appetizing and preferably able to be cooked in a single pot.

Wheelchair Accessible Camping: A Boon for Those with Physical Disabilities
September 30th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedUntil now, you may have thought that your wheelchair would prevent you from partaking in the glories of nature – from going to a campsite, breathing in fresh air, and relaxing. But that does not have to be the case. In fact, today, anyone can go camping – and that includes you, regardless of your level of mobility. Today, you can go to sites that offer wheelchair accessible camping.
What You Should Know about Wheelchair Accessible Camping
There are so many different wheelchair accessible camping sites that are available out there for you to choose from, and so this is really fantastic because this means that even if you are handicapped or disabled in some way, you are still able to go out and do all of those wonderful things that you love.
Basically, the term wheelchair accessible camping simply means that the site you go to will have ramps and lifts, so you can get around easily in your chair without any need for assistance. This will definitely make life much easier than if you went to a site without these amenities.
This is especially important when you are doing something such as camping, as you are going to be outdoors and are going to have to get around from place to place quickly enough that you can keep up with everyone else and enjoy yourself, rather than being left behind and being bored or not having fun.
Before you go on any camping trip then, if you need a wheelchair accessible camping site, then you are going to have to take some time and call around to the different camping grounds so that you can find out which ones offer wheelchair accessible camping options, and then work from there.
You really want to make sure that you choose a camping ground that takes the matter of accessibility seriously, because after all this is a very important subject. It is actually surprising how many campgrounds have not yet added wheelchair ramps and matters of the like to their grounds, as not only would it be obviously considerate but as well it would attract more people.
There is one important thing to remember: always take your time, especially if you are alone. Try not to get frustrated, even if you get stuck with in some particularly troublesome scenarios. Instead, remain calm and figure out how to work around them. Additionally, remember that there are usually people around at wheelchair accessible camping grounds who are willing to walk you through the entire process and help you with particular challenges should the need arise.

Why Not a Vintage Trailer?
September 28th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedYou might think that antique or vintage might be a nice word to toss in front of, say, a particular type of clothing or a piece of pottery, but how about a trailer? Do you really want to purchase a trailer with the label “vintage”? That is—do you really want to purchase something mechanical that is also old? Will it really be as comfortable as a modern trailer? Or will it be small, cramped, and hopelessly outmoded by newer models?
Contrary to what most would think, these old trailer models can actually be quite nice. Not only are they stylish, but they are also comfortable. And, yes, you can find models that are retrofitted to include all of the high tech equipment you have come to integrate into your daily life.
Why Use a Vintage Trailer, Rather than a Modern Trailer? Why Not?
There are always some advantages and disadvantages about buying or renting vintage camping trailers. Depending on your taste and preferences, you can actually have a lot of fun living in vintage trailers for a few days or even weeks. One of the advantages of living in vintage trailer is that you have opportunity of reacquainting yourself with the past. Note that vintage items have some historic value attached to them. If you are one of those ultra modern people who have not really been into something old, this is now the chance for you to really experience how it is to be inside a camper that has seen so many seasons. Besides, a vintage trailer will always serve as a picturesque background in your camping trip photos. You can always brag to your friends that you live in this fabulous vintage camping trailer.
One of the biggest disadvantages of purchasing a “vintage” trailer is that they can be quite pricey. Most vintage things are quite expensive because they represent a piece of history. When you buy some old things like vintage cars, clothes and others, you are actually buying a piece of history. Depending on the history attached to the vintage item, its price could easily soar to several thousands of dollars. In fact, rare vintage objects are considered as so value that some collectors are willing to pay millions of dollars for them. If you do not have the money to spare, you better stay away from vintage camping trailers.

Texas Camping in the Great Outdoors
September 26th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedEverything in Texas is big; and camping is no exception. In fact, Texas is host to many excellent campsites. Wheter you want to hike, climb, fish, or simply walk the trails, you will find it in Texas; and you can be sure that it will be big.
But before you hit the road, there are a number of things you need to take into consideration. For instance, you need to make sure that you are adequately supplied for your trip. Not having the right supplies always spells a disaster. You also should figure out where you are going and what you will do.
So where should you camp?
Before you do anything else, you will have to figure out where to camp. The best place to do this is by searching for campsites online. Rather than looking up campsites in the yellow pages and calling place after place, simply look at their respective websites to see what they have to offer. You can find these sites through a simple Google search.
Texas camping gives you lots of diversity in types of campgrounds available, so think about the facilities that you would like to include in your camp. For example, KOA campgrounds will usually offer a pool and laundry facilities, making them a good choice for those who don’t camp as often or for families. You can also research whether your Texas camping area will offer showers, a playground or a restaurant nearby for when you get tired of wieners over the campfire. If you are looking for a more rustic style of camping, you can find that as well.
Make sure you actually do your homework. This means finding the right activity sites before you leave!
For instance, if you are leaving for a fishing trip in Texas, make sure that you actually have the proper fishing license. Know the rules of the area regarding campfires, and collect all necessary information on the wildlife that is in the vicinity. Learn the rules governing the handling of food and waste at the campsite, and know other details of what to expect from the area that you are traveling to. Test out your camping equipment before your Texas camping trip, to ensure that your stove and lantern is in good working order, and set up your tent to make sure it has not received too much wear and tear. Pack plenty of extra batteries for your lights and heaters, and more water than you think that you will need.
By taking plenty of the proper precautions and making the necessary preparations for your Texas camping trip, you will go far in ensuring that your vacation is a successful one. Once you hit the road, you can relax and enjoy the ride. Happy camping!

Open Up New Dimensions in the Great Outdoors: Go RV Camping
September 22nd, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedWhy do people typically decide to go camping? Is it because they love the great outdoors, the trails, the streams, the meadows, and the mountains – or is it because they have a serious and unwavering love for sleeping on sharp sticks and cold rocks? Is it both or is it simply the former or latter?
I don’t know about you, but I’m not particularly fond of sleeping on rocks and sticks. This is why I think going RV camping is absolutely essential. Not only does it allow you to experience the majesty of the unsettled wilderness, but it allows you to do so from the comfort of a vehicle that condenses many modern luxuries into a small space.
Previously, camping entailed setting up a tent, cooking over an open fire, and getting attached by bugs of all kinds. Now, camping doesn’t have to be that way (unless you enjoy that sort of thing, of course). Now, you can drive your RV to the campsite, hook it into the utility grid offered by the camp, and use your electric-powered devices to perform all tasks you would otherwise have to do with caveman-level technology.
In fact, when you go RV camping all you need is a map to your favorite campground and the time off to enjoy living in the great outdoors. While some may consider a tent or sleeping under the stars roughing it, others see time RV camping with many of the comforts of home equally relaxing. With a satellite mounted on the unit and wireless connections available for their computer and cell phones, roughing it can take on a new meaning.
Although the sizes of some of the units make them unwieldy in some city settings, a two bat can be attached to the back to tow a car behind. Once set up in an RV camping area, the car can be used for trips into the nearest town or for other sightseeing excursions. You can travel the country and park for a day or so in one place while visiting other areas more available to cars.
Recent Movies Popularizing RV Camping
An introduction to RV camping has been made in recent movies that show families cooped up in a recreational vehicle and the trials and tribulations they face on the road. Although most are meant to be comedies, the movies often present a near accurate portrayal of RV camping and almost always end with everyone getting along.
With many of the vehicles designed for RV camping, they are completely self-contained camping and living units on wheels. Most resembling mobile homes with kitchens and separate bedrooms and allow people to lounge in the unit while traveling. For extended trips, this can save time and money when on the road as drivers can switch places and one can sleep comfortably in a bed while the other drives.
One of the attractions to RV camping is the ability to be on the road and see the country without the need to spend time in motels, while still having many of the conveniences of home. Selecting a route for travel can be by location of RV camping parks where you can set up for a day or so and then continue on your journey across country.
